Experience overview

Step into the colorful world of Portugal's iconic azulejo tiles and discover the stories, craftsmanship, and beauty behind this centuries-old art form. The day begins with a scenic drive south of Lisbon to the charming Azeitao region, home to one of the country's most renowned tile workshops. Here, traditional techniques passed down through generations are still used to create intricate designs inspired by Portugal's rich history. During the visit, gain insight into the origins of azulejos and watch artisans at work before trying the craft firsthand by painting a personal tile. This unique creation will be baked and can be delivered to a hotel in Lisbon or shipped home (shipping not included). After a creative morning, enjoy free time in the charming seaside village of Sesimbra, where you can relax and choose a lunch at your own expense. Your guide will be happy to offer recommendations on where to eat. On the return to Lisbon, take in striking examples of tilework found throughout the city, offering a glimpse into how this art form shapes Portugal's architectural identity. The afternoon continues with a visit to the historic Madre de Deus Convent, home to the National Azulejo Museum. Dating back to the 15th century, the convent itself is a masterpiece, with a richly decorated Baroque interior designed as a complete work of art. Inside the museum, explore an extraordinary collection of tiles spanning from the 15th century to contemporary works, including influences from Spanish and Dutch traditions. The experience concludes with a look at some of Portugal's most celebrated artists, including Bordalo Pinheiro, Raul Lino, and Maria Keil, whose works have helped define the country's artistic legacy.
