Experience overview

Discover Montevideo's Jewish heritage alongside its historic landmarks, lively markets, and scenic waterfront. This guided tour brings together the city's cultural highlights and the stories of the Jewish communities that helped shape Uruguay's capital. Begin at the pier and head into Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo's Old Town and the first area of Jewish settlement in the city. Enjoy a guided walk from Constitution Square to Independence Square, taking in historic architecture and the Paseo de los Soles along the way. Pass through the Citadel Gate and see notable landmarks including the Solis Theatre, Palacio Salvo, and the Artigas Monument. Visit the Great Sephardic Synagogue and Museum to learn more about the community's history, while discovering other connections to Jewish life, including the Hebraica and Macabi community center and Golda Meir Square. Continue to the impressive National Parliament building before exploring Villa Munoz, traditionally known as Montevideo's Jewish quarter. Learn about the immigrants who made this neighborhood their home and discover architectural traces of its Ashkenazi heritage. A stop at the Agricultural Market offers a lively introduction to local culture, with stalls showcasing Uruguayan foods and regional specialties. Travel along the Rambla, Montevideo's picturesque waterfront promenade, through the residential neighborhoods of Punta Carretas and Pocitos, where Jewish community life continues today. Stop for a guided visit to the Holocaust Memorial, a place of remembrance and reflection overlooking the Rio de la Plata. Your final stop is Mercado del Puerto, the bustling Port Market near the pier. Take in its traditional steakhouses, artisan offerings, and welcoming atmosphere before returning to your cruise ship. Please note: A copy of each guest's passport must be provided in advance to meet security requirements at Jewish community sites. Interior synagogue visits are unavailable on Saturdays and Jewish holidays; alternative cultural experiences will be provided on these dates.
